In case any anti-war folks missed it, the United Nations is throwing its backing behind the mission in Afghanistan – again.

From his spokesperson’s statement of 5 Nov 07:

“The Secretary-General underlines the crucial role that the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force and the Afghan security forces are playing to ensure that Afghanistan does not again become a host for terrorist and extremist groups. He takes this opportunity to thank all those countries who have provided assistance to Afghanistan, and reiterates Security Council Resolution 1776, which expressed its appreciation for “the leadership provided by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and for the contributions of many nations to ISAF and the OEF (Operation Enduring Freedom) coalition, including its maritime interdiction component.”

Not quite enough?  How about a resolution by the General Assembly:

“Deeply concerned by the “increasingly strong nexus” between Taliban-led violence in Afghanistan and criminal activity spawned by the reconstituted opium trade, the General Assembly today called on the Afghan Government and the wider international community to continue their efforts to address those remaining “serious challenges threatening the democratic process as well as social and economic reconstruction” in the war-torn country.

Wrapping up its annual debate on the situation in Afghanistan, the Assembly, acting without a vote, adopted a wide-ranging resolution, which noted, among other things, political advances and improvement in building Afghanistan’s security sector….”

Read it and weep, appeasers!
