TALIBAN PROPAGANDA WATCH: More Evidence of Taliban War Crimes

without comments

A little more grist for the mill following Amnesty International’s statement this week about the 28 Oct 09 attack on U.N. and election staff in Kabul – a reminder of Amnesty’s words (emphasis mine):

“Attacks targeting civilians constitute war crimes.  (Amnesty) said that if, as the Taleban suggest, this attack is part of a strategy of widespread or systematic attacks on the civilian population, carried out in pursuit of the Taleban’s policy of disrupting the upcoming elections, this attack could also constitute a crime against humanity.

In a little interview Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid reportedly did with the Taliban web site Al-Emarah (PDF of English and Arabic versions available at non-terrorist site here), he’s quoted saying this:

The leadership has instructed all Mujahideen to foil the process, target the polling stations and workers. I believe the election process will fail, but we call on all our countrymen to avoid taking part in the elections and keep away from polling stations because the Mujahideen have hammered out plans of attacks on these centers.”

Plain English for any war crimes investigators:  “We told insurgents to attack election polling stations, and they have plans to do so.”

I eagerly await the Taliban following the next two bits of advice from Amnesty International (which they must respect to some extent if they asked for their help in another little matter):

Amnesty International said that the Taleban must immediately end such attacks. Those suspected of carrying the attacks out or ordering them must be brought to justice.

More on The Taliban, The UN and al-Qaida

without comments

Regarding how the Taliban have been bashing the U.N. lately (more here and here), after posting a comment to a jihadica.com post, AQ expert Anne Stenersen (links to bio; a research fellow with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, and author of a book on AQ’s quest for weapons of mass destruction) was kind enough to respond to my questions re: why the recent bashing.

Main points:

1)  U.N. bashing is far from new for the Taliban (I obviously pointing to how much more reading I need to do).

The Taliban’s leaders have criticized the UN on a number of occasions, in addition to the one you mention. In 2006 Mullah Omar accused the UN of being nothing but a “tool for America” and Mullah Baradir echoed this in 2008, saying that “we regard all the decisions of the United Nations towards Afghanistan, as American orders.” I do not think their 12 Oct 09 statement was issued as a direct response to forum criticism, since it is pretty consistent with the Taliban’s past propaganda statements on the UN.

2)  And how about hating the U.N. vs. wanting to get along well with the neighbours?  Stenersen says you can have both:

In the 1990s there was a huge debate within the Taliban regime on whether to join the UN or not – the main argument against it was that joining the UN would mean that the Islamic Emirate would have to subordinate itself to “infidel” laws (the UN Charter, etc). Having strategic alliances with other countries is another matter, which may also be easier to defend from a religious point of view …. But clearly, there are many within the wider jihadi community who do not agree to this distinction.

3)  The ideological differences suggested in the recent statements, according to Stenersen, won’t affect the current fight (as long as the Taliban see themselves as winning).

AQ central are probably not too happy about the Taliban-IEA’s recent propaganda statements, although I do not think it will have any practical implications for the insurgency – there is simply not enough incentive for neither the Quetta Shura or AQ central to “turn on” the other as long as there is a common enemy to fight and the Quetta Shura see themselves in a position of strength (i.e. there is no need for them to enter into negotiations with the Afghan regime, in which they would probably have to renounce their relationship with al-Qaida)

Special thanks to Anne Stenersen for the information.

TALIBAN PROPAGANDA WATCH: Taliban Big Wig Says “We Can’t Be Bought”

with 2 comments

According to the Taliban’s web page, it appears to be “been there, done that” when it comes to bribing “moderate” Talibs to get them to switch sides, as is being touted by the U.S.

It didn’t take long for the Tailban’s English-language web page to share this tidbit (PDF version at non-terrorist page here), attributed to highish-up Taliban commander (“Deputy-Amir of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” according to the statement) Mullah Brader Akhund, calling the idea:

an old weapon that has failed already. The British invaders used it in the 19th century but failed; the former Soviet Union used it, it failed too. The Afghan Mujahid people and the Mujahideen at the front lines have vast experiences of the past three decades in this regard and know all tactics used by the enemy.

And the idea of “moderate Taliban”?  The statement straightens us out on THAT score:

The terms of moderate (Taliban) and extremists are American-invented terms, which have no physical existence.

More “we’re only a national liberation movement” messaging:

The Mujahideen have been carrying out this Jihad for obtainment of independence of the country and establishment of a Sharia system there …. They have lofty Islamic and nationalist aims …. This war will come to an end when all invaders leave our country and an Islamic government based on the aspirations of our people is formed in the country.

There’s also a warning to expats coming back to help:

The American rulers should not think that all heroic Afghan nation is like the few well-known Afghan Americans who sell their country and who have received training in the CIA cells for many years. Here in this country, selling one’s country quid pro qu money and government slot is not only a crime according to Islam but also a historical taunt and infamy .

I also read the bit in red should as a warning to anyone even considering taking such a bribe.

The bottom line:  “We can’t be bought, thanks.”

The Mujahideen have not chosen this path of strife between the truth and the evil to obtain some material goals.

More on Nabbed Pro-Taliban Web Mistress

without comments

Remember Beverly Giesbrecht, aka Khadija Abdul Qahaar?

While I can’t say I agree with everything on The Jawa Report, I love the bluntness of some of the content.  Case in point:  this, on the missing web mistress:

Let me just make note of a few things in this terribly researched Canada.com story. The author, “Jane Seyd”, seems to interview only a few people for the story, but the main source is a close friend of Beverly’s named Glen Cooper.

Any person who was close friends with Beverly Giesbrecht will also meet one or more of the following criteria: very stupid; on the Leftwing fringe; a terror supporter; or the kind of person who finds it necessary to befriend the crazy old lady with all the cats down the street.

Besides the source, here are the two major problems:

1) Nowhere does the article mention that Jihad Unspun was an objectively pro-terrorist and pro-Taliban publication.

2) The friend tells us that Beverly went to Pakistan to make a documentary. What it does not mention is the fact that the documentary was meant to portray the Taliban as the good guys in the war.

Accurate, brief and clear – the ABCs of good writing.

House of Commons Committee to Consider Detainee Fracas

without comments

The latest on the “who knew what when about possible abuse of prisoners handed over by Canadian troops?” (more here, here, here and here), from the Canadian Press:

A special House of Commons committee will conduct a wide-ranging investigation into the handling of Afghan prisoners – including whether senior officials knew about the risk of torture in Kandahar jails and whether there was an attempted coverup.  The Liberals, NDP and Bloc Quebecois teamed up (28 Oct 09) behind closed doors to launch the probe …. The committee, like other Commons bodies, has the power to issue subpoenas. Hearings could begin as early as next week.

Here’s the agenda of the meeting where this happened – pretty detailed, eh?

Based on this, and the general nature of the minutes from previous sessions, one has to wonder how transparent this exercise is going to be.
