• F-35 Tug o’ War  We have a winner in the “who’ll review DND’s F-35 assumptions?” sweepstakes!  “The Harper government has hired the accounting firm KPMG to crunch the numbers on the F-35 stealth fighter program.  It will cost taxpayers $643,535 to conduct the independent assessment, which was ordered in the wake of a scathing auditor general’s report that accused both National Defence and Public Works of hiding the true cost of the project.  The government promised last spring the review would be complete and tabled in Parliament by June, but it was forced to re-issue the tender last month after the original contract didn’t allow the accountants enough flexibility to complete the work ….”  MERX posting of the contract award here (also downloadable as a PDF via Milnet.ca here if link doesn’t work for you), and a bit more media coverage here.
• Big honkin’ hangar opened near Trenton  “The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, officially opened the new Central Region Cadet Hangar …. at CFD Mountain View. The total project cost is approximately $16 million, of which the cost of building the hangar represents approximately $8.5 million. Approximately 46 new jobs were created through the construction of this hangar ….”
