“War” Reporting, or Legitimizing Rumours?

I was disappointed in one of the many follow-up stories I read regarding the death of Michelle Mendes in Afghanistan.

Why is is that this Sun Media reporter felt compelled to write what many would say is a short article about just waiting to be able to feed information to the reporter’s mother ship?

(Here’s a .pdf version of the article in case the link doesn’t work.)

Why have I seen no other reporters filing stories regarding what was being bandied about as rumour about other soldiers’ deaths?

While I’m uncomfortable with some information released by some outlets on this one, at least the other outlets attributed the quote.

Anything to get a sensationalist tidbit out there first, right? Or just trying to match the most sensationalistic element of other media outlets’ coverage of the same story?
