TALIBAN PROPAGANDA WATCH: I’m Not Alone in Using Google Translate

One of the “usual suspect” web pages I check from time to time for Taliban news propaganda in English is The Unjust Media site.

A recent translation leaves me guessing that maybe the webmeisters there, like me, are using Google Translate.

Here’s what the official English version of a recent Taliban statement has to say:

Mujahideen lay siege to Kandi district in Kunar province
Tuesday, 16 February 2010 07:32 By Zabihullah Mujahid
KUNAR, Feb. 16 – There are reports from Kunar province Mujahideen have laid a siege to Kandi district for the past ten days closing off all the escape routes of the soldiers caught in the area who have negotiated the their freedom by letting them safely leave the area, however the Mujahideen have not responded positively yet. According to the residents, the soldiers are beginning to run out of foodstuff and other necessitates.

Now, here’s the Unjust Media’s version:

Mujahideen lay siege to Kandi district trapping 50 Canadian invading terrorists in Kunar (Unofficial English, 3rd headline)
There are reports from Kunar province Mujahideen have laid a siege to Kandi district for the past ten days closing off all the escape routes for about fifty Canadian invading terrorists who are caught in the area who have tried to negotiated their freedom by letting them safely leave the area, however the Mujahideen have not responded positively yet. According to the residents, the Canadian invading terrorists are beginning to run out of foodstuff and other necessitates. Reported by Zabihullah Mujahid

WTF?  I stand to be corrected, but I haven’t heard of any Canadian troops in Kunar Province, much less groups of 50 or so of them.

Then, I tried the Google Translated version from Arabic, and got this:

Trapping Center Directorate Canadian (Original in Arabic) – Google English translation
(Arabic to Google English) Monday, February 15th, 2010 16:00 Zabihollah / Mujahid
It is reported from the state of the hyphen that Conner Mujahideen blocked all access roads to the center of the Directorate of Canadian Ten days ago, completely, and that all the enemy soldiers trapped. Recalls that during the past ten days they hoped the soldiers besieged several times of the Mujahideen that open the way for them, for them to vacate the status of the Directorate, and the move towards statehood Asadabad safely, but the Mujahideen Ojabohm no. Say that the people of the area of food to the enemy on the verge of running out, have been a number of the injured soldiers due to lack of medication and therapy. In an urgent news bulletin at about ten o’clock in the morning (2010-02-15) Mujahideen attacked a massive attack on the status of the Directorate, which resulted in losses on a large building of the Directorate, and killings (2) two soldiers and wounded three (3) other serious surgeries. If you know Arabic, I’d appreciate your guidance, but from this, can I assume that the word “Kandi” in Arabic might mean Canadian?

This time, it doesn’t appear to be the Taliban Info-machine’s fault – although they’ve had their share of bad translation moments (more on that here, here, here and here).

TALIBAN PROPAGANDA WATCH: Let’s Take a Deep Breath….

…. before we put too much faith in the latest reports of talks between the Taliban and the United states – the latest from Pakistani media, and those who watch Middle Eastern media:

An Afghan source in Kabul reports that U.S. Ambassador in Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry is holding secret talks with Taliban elements headed by the movement’s foreign minister, Ahmad Mutawakil, at a secret location in Kabul. According to the source, the U.S. has offered the Taliban control of the Kandahar, Helmand, Oruzgan, Kunar and Nuristan provinces in return for a halt to the Taliban missile attacks on U.S. bases. (Al-Watan (Saudi Arabia), 22 Nov 09, via MEMRI blog)

The Obama administration may be close to reversing course on its current strategy in Afghanistan, after DawnNews quoted sources as saying that high-level talks with senior Taliban militants are currently underway.  The indirect talks involve officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Britain, and top Afghan Taliban leadership, including the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Chief and the son-in-law of Osama Bin Laden’s former mentor. (23 Nov 09, DAWN.com)

The US-Taliban talks have been in progress for the last six months, sources said Monday.  Pakistan is also part of these talks, the sources added.  The Afghan Taliban have adopted a stance that they would only be able to guarantee peace in Afghanistan if the US undertakes complete pull out of its forces from the war-torn country.  According to Taliban sources, there is expectation of a positive outcome from the ongoing talks. (23 Nov 09, The News)

Hmmm, letting the Taliban run the show in some provinces in exchange for a break.  Where have we read that before?

The emboldened Taliban movement in Afghanistan turned down an American offer of power-sharing in exchange for accepting the presence of foreign troops, Afghan government sources confirmed.  “US negotiators had offered the Taliban leadership through Mullah Wakil Ahmed Mutawakkil (former Taliban foreign minister) that if they accept the presence of NATO troops in Afghanistan, they would be given the governorship of six provinces in the south and northeast,” a senior Afghan Foreign Ministry official told IslamOnline.net requesting anonymity for not being authorized to talk about the sensitive issue with the media. (2 Nov 09, islamonline.net)

And what did the Taliban say the other times “secret talks” have been mentioned?

“There are some people who are conveying each others’ (Taliban and US) messages. But there were no direct talks between us and America.”

“If you wait for 3000 years, our stand is the same that Taliban will never hold talks in presence of invader forces in Afghanistan.”

I’m going to bet my loony on more of the same coming from the Taliban Info-machine on this latest set of (alleged) talks.

Taliban Claims Chopper Down in Kunar

Nothing in the mainstream media or military pages on this at this point.

TALIBAN PROPAGANDA WATCH: Chopper Claimed Downed in Kunar

Well, if you believe the Taliban, they’ve shot down an American helicopter in Kunar Province – this, from the Voice of Jihad (Arabic, Google English and PDF at non-terrorist site):

“Helicopter of invaders shot down in Kunar 4/9/09
