MILNEWS.ca News Highlights – 11 Jan 11

  • Canada appears to be paying out more compensation for damage caused by fighting in Afghanistan “…. Between April 1, 2009, and March 31, 2010, the military issued 272 ex-gratia payments—more than five per week. The cash settlements ranged from as low as $185 to as high as $21,420, for a grand total of $661,045. That is triple the amount handed out during the previous year (102 payments totalling $205,828) and a fourfold increase from the year before that (57 payments; $152,683) ….” While this seems to be good news for a group monitoring civilian casualties, they haven’t always been so happy about NATO’s compensation policies in general (and have said next to nothing about the Taliban’s) – more on that here, here and here.
  • The military will ground Canada’s spy plane program after the Afghan combat mission ends this summer.  The commander of the prop-driven CU-170 Herons, which operate out of Kandahar Airfield, said the Canadian Forces will disband his squadron once troops pull out of Kandahar.  Maj. Dave Bolton, the new and final commander of Task Force Erebus, said his team will then go on to other jobs within the military.  “There’s a lot of very young people that were involved with this program,” he said in an interview.  “There’s probably going to be a hiatus of somewhere between two and five years. But those people will still be in the military, and those people will have this experience, and they’ll be able to move forward with the yardstick when the time comes.” ….”
  • Following this Canadian Press piece on the IED blast that killed reporter Michelle Lang, Columnist Lysiane Gagnon had this to say: “…. The Canadian government uses embedded journalists to highlight the “human” side of the Afghan war, as well as the undisputed courage of our soldiers. It also deploys civilians to assist the soldiers in humanitarian missions (for instance, Ms. Saeed was to assist Sgt. Taylor as he reached out to the locals). But what happened on Dec. 30, 2009, on a road south of Kandahar, should open up questions about these policies.” Via Twitter, Toronto Star political reporter Joanna Smith raises an interesting question, indeed:  “Is she not arguing that civilians, especially women, should stay out of #Afghanistan entirely?” That’s how I read it, too.
  • A meeting between Canada’s PM and America’s Prez regarding shared perimeter security apparently isn’t ready to happen just yet. “A highly touted meeting between Stephen Harper and Barack Obama on a perimeter security pact has been pushed back as Canada and the United States wrestle with the difficulties of the complex arrangement. Insiders say the signing summit is now expected no earlier than February — and possibly as late as spring. Improving information sharing — a prospect that raises privacy concerns in Canada — is seen as the key to the effort to secure a joint North American outer boundary, the insiders say ….” While Liberals say Canada shouldn’t put all its trade eggs in one basket in expecting some concessions from the U.S., I’m more worried that we won’t get ANY concessions (or none worth the tradeoff of sharing more of my information with the Americans, anyway).
  • According to Postmedia News, Canada and its Mounties are expected to catch some heat for cutting the number of armed air marshals to be deployed on commercial planes. “…. Documents obtained by Postmedia News through the Access to Information Act reveal internal memos describing how the cuts will occur, how the Mounties are briefing Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, and how the police and cabinet ministers are receiving some dire warnings about the consequences of the cutbacks.  The Mounties’ briefing note to Toews explains that the air marshals program is seen as a “world leader” of its type and that it has been successful through a “combination of operation, intelligence and analysis activities.”  “International partners were made aware of the funding reduction to the Canadian Air Carrier Protective Program,” Toews was advised. “The RCMP anticipates a negative response from American and international partners.” ….” It sure would be nice to see the documents themselves, though.
  • Latest in a multi-part series of papers from Canada’s military research arm:   “The Justifications for War and Peace in World Religions Part III: Comparison of Scriptures from Seven World Religions” (PDF)  Part 1 (“Extracts, Summaries and Comparisons of Scriptures in the Abrahamic Religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism)”) here and Part 2 (“Extracts, Summaries and Comparisons of Scriptures in Indic Religions (Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism)”) here (all links PDF).
  • Um, I think someone is fighting a bit of a rear guard action here. “…. Abandoning (don’t ask don’t tell) reeks of a political decision more than a military one. While general officers may feel forced to accede to political decisions, rank-and-file soldiers are likely to be uncomfortable with the new policy. There is a 60-day period of grace to ensure the military will adjust to the new policy with no harmful effects. The die is cast, but disagreements remain. Already the marines and elite combat units and Special Forces reject the new policy, with close to 60% believing the policy will adversely affect fighting qualities. Advocates — or at least defenders — of gays openly serving in the military point to ancient Sparta where military service was revered. Sparta remains to this day as a symbol of military defiance, courage, loyalty and stoicism. Remember Thermopylae. In Sparta, boys were taken from their mothers at age seven and began an initiation that would make them soldiers. Each youth had a trained soldier as a “mentor,” and this relationship could have sexual overtones or straight friendship. The mentor’s job was to ensure the soldierly development of his ward ….” Notwithstanding the fact that homosexuality was widespread even among the Spartans (since they reflected Greek society), this next bit urks me: “…. Among NATO countries, some 20 of 26 members allow gays to serve in the military with no apparent ill-effects — though this is somewhat uncertain, given NATO’s reluctance to share in the fighting in Afghanistan ….” Maybe I’m the only one seeing some link between accepting homosexuals in the ranks and poor fighting spirit, but since Canada is one such NATO country, does he mean we’ve been “reluctant to share in the fighting”?  Here’s more than 150 pieces of evidence that this is most certainly NOT the case.
  • This columnist has some advice for Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff on promising to scrap the F-35 if the Liberals get power in a future election“…. Some think all major government contracts should go to tender. They should remember the Winnipeg embarrassment. Brian Mulroney’s government wanted to put some money into a Quebec aviation company. They thought they’d be tricky and put a contract out for tender. But a Winnipeg company, Bristol, came in with the winning bid. Oops. The government looked sleazy as it tried to extricate itself from the situation. And a lot of people in western Canada have never forgotten the buffoonish incident. That brings us to this rule: Never send out for tender any projects unless you are willing to accept the winning bid. That’s what we told ministers when I worked in the government’s procurement department, then known as Supply and Services. It is a message Ignatieff has apparently not received because he’s busily relying on Mulroney ….”

Statement of the Islamic Emirate of Regarding the American Process of the Misleading Elections Screen capture of full statement at Scribd.com

Monday, 20 September 2010 16:38 –

Viewing that the Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan foiled the so-called elections process of the parliament on September 18, as they have already foiled other conspiracies with the help of Allah (SwT) and the help of the Mujahid people of Afghanistan, Therefore, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan congratulates the Mujahid nation particularly the heroic Mujahideen on this victory and the resulting disgrace to the enemy. Hence, it declares as follows:

1. The wake and brave nation of Afghanistan positively responded to the call of the Islamic Emirate not to participate in the misleading elections under the American process. Avoiding participation in this process, the majority people of Afghanistan unquestionably rejected the elections. Therefore, the results of the elections are not acceptable to them.

2. Polling stations remained closed in 162 districts out of almost 400 districts. 1260 polling stations closed before 11 o’clock of the day. Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate, entirely attacked 480 polling centers. Only in capital Kabul and provincial cities of Mazar-e-sharif, Herat and other few provincial cities, some government employees went to the polling stations to cast votes. So these elections were only limited to the administrative employees of the Kabul stooge administration and which, ironically, the pro-government media still calls as elections. Therefore, the outcome of the so-called elections has no legal credibility.

3. The freedom-loving people of Afghanistan practically showed that they are against the foreigners and their flunkeys by not participating in the so-called elections process conducted by the invaders and their surrogates. So the invading forces should take a lesson from this fiasco and should put an end to the occupation of Afghanistan and their hostage-taking our people.

4. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan reaffirms to the public of the world that neither the invading forces nor their stooge administration has hold over vast areas of the country, nor they are able to conduct fraud-free elections. Only, they want to pave the way for the most unscrupulous and corruption-ridden elements to grab power time and again.

Therefore, all the public of the world should reject all anti-Afghan intrigues of the invaders, particularly, their foiled and misleading elections process and should not recognize the would- be selected surrogates as the genuine representatives of our nation.

Complete report on Kandahar operation Screen capture of full statement at Scribd.com

Wednesday, 04 August 2010 20:24 Qari Yousuf Ahmadi

Yesterday’s successful operation was part of a broader operation Al-Fath, being carried out by Mujahideen of Islamiic Emirate of Afghanistan throughout the whole country.

Alemarah website interviewed Mauli Muhammad Akram, the head of this operation and asked some questions regarding yesterday’s events which are as follows:

Alemara: Could you give us some details about yesterday’s successful operation.

Mauli Muhammad Akram: Yesterday morning, about 11:30 am, a Martydom seeking Mujahid blew his explosive-laden truck at the northern gate, close to the invaders learning facility, in which 150 US and Canadian soldiers were busy with military studies. Then two missiles were fired and hit 2 watchtowers, 20 meters away from the learning facility.

After the way was cleared, 6 Martydom seeking Mujahideen carrying 2 RPG’s, 4 heavy machineguns and each carrying 5 grenades, sharp knives and machetes’, 7 rifle magazines and 8 rockets entered the learning facility and killed those soldiers who had not yet died from the initial explosions.

Mauli Akram added that the initial blast also destroyed a tower, containing computers and other electronic equipment.

Alemara: When and how did these 7 Mujahideen become martyrs?

Mauli Muhammad Akram: 1 Mujahid was martyred when he blew up his explosive-laden truck. 2 others blew their explosive belts and were martyred when we were praying Asr, late afternoon. 3 others were martyred early in the evening during Magrib prayer.

Alemara: Could you tell us some details about the destroyed helicopters.

Mauli Muhammad Akram: 50 meters behind the learning facility, 12 helicopters were stationed in a workshop, which were shot with RPG rounds containing petrol and are believed to be destroyed. Later that afternoon the US terrorist tried to fly a helicopter close to the workshop but came under RPG fire and was destroyed.

Alemarah: Could you tell us about enemy casualties

Mauli Muhammad Akram: Around 173 NATO terrorists were killed in yesrday’s operation. This includes 150 invaders who came to the base in 3 buses a couple hours before the attack took place. 7 others died during the helicopter incident and 16 others were killed in explosions and clashes with the Mujahideen. I must add that in the clashes and explosions that took place throughout the day, a lot of other invaders also died and a large number of their resources were also destroyed.

Alemara: ISAF says that the tractor carrying explosives got stuck in the mud before reaching the base and the other Martydom seeking Mujahideen were gunned down while trying to reach the base. What do you say about these claims?

Mauli Muhammad Akram: Yes, the tractor incident happened a day before the operation, when it was sent on reconnaissance mission. ISAF are telling blatant lies and it has nothing to do with yesterday’s operation.

Alemara: The world media is keeping quiet due to American pressure. Have the Mujahideen done any sound or video recordings of the operation?

Mauli Muhammad Akram: Yes, we have done some video recordings of the operation and it will be released at a suitable time.

Alemara: Thank you very much for sharing this information with our audience and the world.

Why not the other NATO countries follow suit? Screen capture at Scribd.com MILNEWS.ca analysis

Wednesday, 04 August 2010 12:26 administrator

It is determined that Holland’s forces of nearly 2000 troops will be withdrawn by earlier this month. This move practically put an end to its invasion of Afghanistan.

The Dutch refused the endeavors and insistence of the US to extend its troops stay till 2012, asserting that it is no longer willing to stay further and continue having its soldiers killed on the ground in Afghanistan.

The US’ urge to persuade the Holland to continue its troops’ military presence in Uruzgan province at least for another two months bore no fruit as the Dutch remained inflexible to pull its forces out of Afghanistan as scheduled.

On the other hand, the public of the Netherlands and its diplomats are comfortable and express their joys and solidarity over the decision of troops’ pullout from Afghanistan and consider it a rational motive to avoid the collapse of their own country.

Huffington post, a well-known Dutch press quoted some analysts, as saying that several of the NATO countries intend to take up the Dutch slack and bring their mission in Afghanistan to an end so as to avoid the wasted lives of their soldiers on the ground.

The post reported Gen Van Uhm, commander of the Dutch forces in Uruzgan, as saying in spite of the fact that the Dutch forces had a tough four-year long mission full of risks in such a dangerous place as Uruzgan and he had lost his 23-year old son in clashes with Taliban, yet he is happy to make a timely return for his home country.

With the US bankrupting itself in the war and bringing its empire to the verge of collapse, the Dutch troops’ withdrawal is, undoubtedly, a devastating blow to it which leaves military and financial gab on the ground whose burden may be covered by the US itself.

Furthermore, the withdrawal of the Dutch forces from Afghanistan could possibly provide grounds for Germany to prove its claim to follow suit.

Under circumstances, that is understandable that Germany’s stand to follow suit may create a strong inclination in other partnering countries to accelerate their troops’ withdrawal process as the US’ important allies such as Canada, Australia and Britain that view the war in Afghanistan with disappointment, mistrust and the fact remains that the war is an unbearable burden on their shoulders which will get them nowhere.

Every observer would say the US government and military lied to their teeth in order to cover up the failure of their policies and their war crimes in Afghanistan and to irrationally justify Afghan war, while it is a common knowledge that the Afghan nation has a brighter history of good relations worldwide as long as the war is not imposed on them.

In the end, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan view the Dutch forces’ pullout as a genuine effort to meet the wants and demands of both Afghan and Dutch nations and a move in better interests of both countries, asking the allied countries which have invaded Afghanistan in collaboration with the US invading forces to take up the Dutch slack and respect the moral, social and religious values of Afghan war-stricken nation and do the job of leaving Afghanistan, the earlier the better, since it is advisable to do something earlier than what has to be done later with dire consequences. Moreover, they are to stop rubber stamping and following the US blindly which is no one else’s friend and well-wisher knowing none but its interests, and to avoid further wasted lives of their soldiers in Afghanistan.

It rational that the US forces should be left in Afghanistan alone to stew in their own juice and suffer the dire and dangerous consequences of their violation and invasion of another country.
